After reading the
articles, I was not aware that there were so many methods and approaches which
can be used in the Literature classroom by the teacher to help students
understand or enjoy literature. Some of the information which I read will be
beneficial to me as I plan on using some of these approaches in the classroom
in my English class. What I found interesting was that while composing children
read continually. I was not aware that Holism in poetry study is needed so that
students reflect upon inherent ideas, not segments. The beauty of language
needs can be noticed in poems. Poetry makes use of imagery in writing as well
as the use of alliteration adds novelty and originality in poetry writing.
Ideas which were
interesting to me during my readings were from the article 26 ways to connect. In
this article there were many new ideas which can be used to teach students of
all age groups which were surprising to me. I was not aware that there were so many
methods. One of the methods which interested me was the H which symbolized Holidays. This can be used to as a
constant source of ideas and motivation for both the teachers and students.
This can be used to encourage yearlong reading and writing. Since all students
of all ages experience a holiday it can be used to help them write and express
their ideas.
One new idea which I
learnt was in the article on Teaching Students to write and Read Poetry. The
idea on marinating students in poetry and poetic language was new to me as it
can be used at any time during the day so that students are able hear and
listen to poetry at any time. This method I believe will allow students more
open to poetry and to also learn from it. It allows students to learn new words
as well as encourage students to create a poets corner in their classroom which
I believe can be useful in the class as students will be able to gain more
experience in poetry.
Some obstacles which
the teachers may encounter in the implementation of some of these approaches
are that the teachers may not be willing to make use of the strategies and also
they may be time consuming to implement. Teachers may also not be knowledgeable
in the use of the strategies and may not be able to implement the strategies
effectively.
Some recommendations
which can be implemented are more time can be provided for the teaching of
poetry and also by providing teachers with workshops where they are taught how
to implement the strategies effectively in the classroom. Teachers can also be
provided information on the various strategies which can be used and
implemented. Teachers should therefore make an effort to increase the use of
those strategies in the class.
